My name is Toby Jones, a British/American academic and researcher based in The Netherlands. I offer editing and proofreading services to academics who could use some help in honing their English writing abilities, though most professional writing needs rigorous proofing!

About me

I have been in academia since 2007, doing my Bachelors Degree at St Andrews in the UK, and my Masters and PhD at Leiden University in The Netherlands, where I was also a lecturer. I recently completed a Post-Doc in the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.

I have published several academic articles in journals such as the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, and have served as a reviewer for a range of journals as well.

Since 2014 I have provided academic proofreading services and in 2024 I founded TJ Research as a freelance company in The Netherlands.

I have edited several collected volumes produced by scholars such as Prof. Gabrielle van den Berg and Prof. Marie Soressi at Leiden University, and Dr. Ishayahu Landa at Bonn University. In 2026 I have taken on two contracts for collected volumes from the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press. I have also worked on PhD projects at Leiden, Bonn, and Charles University in Czechia.

What I can do for you

  • Use Word’s Track Changes function for correcting grammatical or spelling errors.
  • Add comments that can assist with wider questions of structure, form, and content.
  • Fix mistakes in notes and bibliography using your preferred method i.e. Chicago and MLA reference styles.
  • Provide help which AI proofing cannot assist with, and thus give your work the best possible chance of success.

In terms of content, naturally the closer your topic is to my field of specialisation, the better I can assist you. But anything in the area of Middle Eastern studies/Asian studies/history would allow me particular insight into your work.
